Iranian Photojournalist Arrested in Kabul: Afghanistan Journalists Center

Muhammad Hussain Welayati, the photojournalist for Iran’s Tasnim News Agency who had recently traveled to Afghanistan has been arrested in the Afghan capital, Kabul, Afghanistan Journalists Center said in a statement.
The center has not named anyone who arrested the journalist though, and asked for his urgent and unconditional release.
The statement while quoting Tasnim News Agency said Welayati had stayed in Afghanistan for ten days and was arrested at Kabul International Airport without providing further details of the cause behind his detention.
The matter has been shared with Iran’s ambassador and special envoy to Afghanistan Hassan Kazemi Qumi and Iran’s foreign ministry by the national security commission of the country’s House of Representatives.
Afghanistan Journalists Center, urging his urgent release, asked the Islamic Emirate to end the detention and ill-treatment of journalists.
According to the center, eleven journalists have been detained in the past two weeks across Afghanistan, nine still in custody.
The center’s stats show the overall number of journalists-in-custody to be 13.
The Islamic Emirate has not commented on the issue yet.
